Five Things To Do Right Now to Protect Your Privacy on Your iPhone!

  1. Make sure you have installed the updates. They often contain fixes for security issues.
    • Remember, you can check your update status by going to Settings.
    • Scroll down to General
    • Tap on Software Update.
  2. Be extra vigilant in public places now that some of the COVID restrictions are starting to be rolled back.
    • Never enter a banking or other financial username/password when in an airport, cafe, etc. Hackers have access to software that can retrieve that information if they are within close proximity.
    • Avoid “juice-jacking” by not using public charging stations. Again, hackers are very clever, and there are ways for them to install devices that install malware on your iPhone. Carry an external charger or use a USB Data Blocking device. Both are available at electronics stores.
  3. Turn on “Private Address” under Wi-Fi settings. This feature helps to keep your iPhone from being tracked across different Wi-Fi networks.
    • Go to Settings.
    • Scroll to Wi-Fi and tap.
    • Tap the blue i in the circle next to your Wi-Fi network.
    • Tap on Private Address.
  4. Check the Security Recommendations in the Password section of settings.  This feature lets you know if you have any compromised passwords.
    • Go to Settings.
    • Scroll down to Passwords.
    • Tap on Security Recommendations and take appropriate actions.
  5. Put a PIN on your SIM card. If your iPhone is stolen, the thief can remove the SIM card from a locked phone and put it in an unlocked phone, and access your personal information. First, you need to check with your carrier to find out the SIM PIN.  They set the original one.  I found my SIM PIN by searching ATT + SIM PIN. Tried the same strategy with Verizon and also found the information. Once you have it, follow the directions below. Here is a website that explains the process: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201529
    • Go to Settings.
    • Scroll to Cellular.
    • Tap on SIM PIN.
    • Turn on SIM PIN.
    • Enter the PIN from your carrier.
    • Tap Change PIN and follow the directions.
    • Record that number somewhere safe, but not available to others.

Pam, I left out an important piece of information! The SIM cards comes with a PIN set by the carrier. You can find out what it is by googling the carrier’s name plus SIM PIN. For example ATT + SIM PIN. You’ll find the number easily and you type that in. Once it is accepted, you can change the SIM PIN. FYI–both Verizon and ATT use the same PIN so it makes sense to change it. I’ve corrected the information above in the blog. Thank you for your comment.
