Try Periscope –it’s a fun, free app that allows you to broadcast live over the internet. Did you ever want to be a color commentator for a sports event or offer pithy comments during a speech or talk? Now you can—live!
I have a friend in the hospital who loves to attend local events. Yesterday was the Moxie Days parade here in Lisbon Falls, Maine. As we sat under dripping trees in the rain, I turned on Periscope and did a running commentary of the early part of the parade. Believe or not, I had people following the broadcast before I was done. They got to experience a little bit of Maine small town culture wherever they were. (One was in India!)
Below is the video.
You are able to save the broadcast to your Photos app or Gallery and share via Twitter.
It’s unbelievably easy to use. Once you download it from the App Store or the Google Play Store, open it up. The menu is on the bottom. Tap the camera icon and you will see this image. Start your broadcast.
I can see how businesses and organizations might use this app to promote products and services. However, right now I think mostly about ways to connect with family and friends:
- See graduations live.
- Take friends along on a trip.
- Allow someone who is housebound or in the hospital enjoy a walk along the river with you.
- Share the “surprise” at a birthday party.
- Let Grammy and Grampy see baby’s first steps in real time.
Here are a couple of links that explain more about Periscope.
